Book-to-Screen

Book-to-Screen Services

Assessment, development, positioning and industry strategy for authors preparing a literary property for film or television consideration.

01 — Book-to-Screen

Adaptation Assessment

A professional read of your book's screen potential, before anything is developed or approached.

The assessment is the entry point to the division. A reader with both editorial and screen-development experience works through the manuscript or published book and reports honestly on what a screen adaptation would have to build on, and what it would have to solve.

The assessment also considers format. A property may appear better suited to a feature film, a limited series, a returning television series, or to no screen route at all — and we would rather tell you that at the start than after materials have been produced.

Request an Adaptation Assessment

What the assessment examines

  • Story structure
  • Character strength
  • Conflict
  • Visual potential
  • Setting
  • Genre
  • Audience
  • Dramatic arc
  • Adaptation challenges
  • Feature-film potential
  • Limited-series potential
  • Television potential

Potential deliverables

  • Professional Screen Adaptation Assessment, written and referenced to your text
  • A format view: feature film, limited series, television series, or another development route
  • An honest statement of the adaptation challenges a producer would raise
  • A recommended next stage, where one is warranted

02 — Book-to-Screen

Screen Development

Translating the strengths of the book into a screen-oriented development framework.

Where the assessment supports it, we develop the screen-facing spine of the project. The objective is translation rather than replacement: the book's identity, voice and central concerns are carried into a form that screen professionals read fluently.

Development is collaborative. Authors review each stage, and adaptation choices are explained rather than imposed.

Discuss Screen Development

What we may develop

  • Logline
  • Screen synopsis
  • Character profiles
  • Story architecture
  • Adaptation direction
  • Treatment
  • Narrative structure
  • Key cinematic sequences
  • Series concept, where appropriate

Potential deliverables

  • Logline and screen synopsis
  • Character profiles written for screen reading
  • Adaptation direction with structural rationale
  • Treatment or series concept, according to the chosen format

Market & Positioning Analysis

Where the project sits, who it speaks to, and how it should be framed for industry readers.

Positioning is how a project is understood before it is read in full. We set the property against comparable productions, identify the audience it plausibly reaches, and articulate what makes it distinct.

This is strategic positioning work. It is not a forecast of commercial performance and it is not a guarantee of interest or success.

Discuss Positioning

What the analysis covers

  • Comparable films
  • Comparable television series
  • Genre positioning
  • Audience analysis
  • Market considerations
  • Distinctive selling points
  • Adaptation positioning
  • International appeal
  • Potential audience segments

Potential deliverables

  • Comparable-production set with reasoning
  • Genre and format positioning statement
  • Audience and international-appeal analysis
  • Distinctive selling points, written in industry language

04 — Book-to-Screen

Pitch Package Development

A complete, producer-facing screen-development package assembled around your property.

The pitch package is the document set an author needs before any professional conversation. It presents the project clearly, at the level of detail development readers expect, and it holds together as one considered proposition rather than a folder of fragments.

Contents are built to the project. A historical limited series and a contained thriller feature do not require the same package.

Discuss a Pitch Package

What a package may include

  • Logline
  • Short synopsis
  • Extended synopsis
  • Character overview
  • Adaptation concept
  • Genre
  • Format recommendation
  • Comparable productions
  • Target audience
  • Author information
  • Project positioning
  • Visual direction
  • Producer-facing presentation materials

Potential deliverables

  • Designed pitch document in a presentation-ready format
  • One-page leave-behind for first approaches
  • Author and project background written for industry readers
  • Visual direction references, where useful to the project

05 — Book-to-Screen

Rights & Project Readiness

Understanding your rights position and project documentation before you approach screen professionals.

Screen professionals ask early and specifically about rights. Authors who cannot answer clearly lose credibility and time. We help you assemble and organise the information a producer or representative will expect to see.

This is preparation and documentation work, not legal advice.

Meridian Press International is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Legal rights advice, contract interpretation, option agreements, purchase agreements and other legal matters should be handled by a qualified entertainment attorney.

Discuss Project Readiness

What we help you prepare

  • Ownership information
  • Publication history
  • Existing publishing agreements
  • Existing rights commitments
  • Screen-rights availability
  • Supporting documentation
  • Project information
  • Materials required for industry discussions

Potential deliverables

  • An organised project and rights information file
  • A checklist of documents to obtain or clarify
  • A plain-language summary of what appears committed and what appears available
  • A list of questions to take to your entertainment attorney

06 — Book-to-Screen

Industry Outreach Strategy

A selective, relevance-led approach to the professionals who might genuinely respond to your project.

Mass submission damages projects. We help authors build a targeted approach based on what a company or individual has actually made, developed or represented, and on the format the project is being positioned for.

The objective is relevance, not volume.

Discuss an Outreach Strategy

Who an approach may be directed toward

  • Production companies
  • Producers
  • Film and television development executives
  • Entertainment agents
  • Managers
  • Literary representatives
  • Other relevant screen-industry professionals

Potential deliverables

  • A researched, prioritised outreach list with reasoning
  • Approach materials matched to each type of recipient
  • Sequencing and timing guidance
  • A record-keeping method for responses and follow-up

07 — Book-to-Screen

Professional Introductions

Where appropriate, and where a genuine professional relationship exists, we may assist with introductions.

Where appropriate, and where genuine professional relationships or suitable opportunities exist, we may assist with introductions to relevant industry professionals.

We do not publish partner logos, we do not claim relationships we do not have, and we do not promise introductions to any named company. An introduction is offered only when a project is ready and a specific contact is genuinely relevant to it.

No introduction is guaranteed. Availability depends on the project, the timing and the interests of the professionals concerned.

Discuss Your Project

How we consider an introduction

  • Whether the project is developed enough to be read well
  • Whether the rights position is clear
  • Whether a specific contact is genuinely relevant to the material
  • Whether the timing suits the recipient's current slate
  • Whether the author is prepared for the conversation that may follow

Potential deliverables

  • An honest view of whether an introduction is warranted at this stage
  • Introduction, where one is available and appropriate
  • Preparation for the conversation, if an introduction proceeds
  • Alternative routes where a direct introduction is not available

08 — Book-to-Screen

Adaptation Development Support

Continued strategic support as a project develops and conversations begin.

Screen development moves slowly and rarely in a straight line. Feedback arrives, positioning shifts, formats change. Ongoing support keeps the project coherent through that process.

Support is strategic and editorial. Where qualified representatives or attorneys are involved, we coordinate with them rather than acting in their place.

Discuss Ongoing Support

What ongoing support may include

  • Reviewing producer feedback
  • Refining project positioning
  • Updating pitch materials
  • Preparing for industry conversations
  • Discussing adaptation direction
  • Coordinating with qualified representatives where appropriate

Potential deliverables

  • Scheduled review sessions as the project develops
  • Revised pitch and positioning materials
  • Preparation notes ahead of industry conversations
  • A written record of decisions and directions taken

Next step

Begin with a professional assessment.

Screen adaptation is a competitive process. No producer, agent, studio, broadcaster, streamer or financier can be guaranteed, and nothing on this page should be read as an offer of representation, production or financing.
