Distribution guide

What authors should know about global distribution

Distribution makes a book available to order. It does not, by itself, make anyone order it. The distinction is worth keeping in mind when comparing services.

The main channels

Print-on-demand networks list a book with online and physical retailers in many countries and print copies as orders arrive. Ebook aggregators deliver files to digital stores and library lending platforms. Wholesale distribution suits books with confirmed demand and a print run.

What you control

List price in each currency, trade discount, returns policy, territories, and the ISBN and imprint on each edition. Higher discounts make a book more attractive to shops but reduce your margin per copy.

Libraries

Libraries order through their own suppliers and need complete records: subject codes, audience, format and a reliable description. Availability in a library catalogue depends on those records and on a librarian choosing the book.

Next step

Discuss your book internationally

Send the manuscript details and the markets you have in mind. We reply with an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.
