Life has a way of directing you towards your passion, and if you listen to your inner voice, you can reach for the stars.

This is the story of how Barry ignored his passion because he doubted his ability and followed the crowd. He had to find courage, ignore the naysayers, learn many lessons, absorb pain, and become himself.

The story follows his experiences across music, theatre, business, politics and sport, as well as his professional journey.

Themes & reading experience

What the book is about, beneath the plot.

Drawn from the book itself, not from marketing copy.

01

Self-doubt

A passion set aside because he doubted his own ability.

02

Courage

Finding the nerve to ignore the naysayers and change direction.

03

Working life

Music, theatre, business, politics and sport, alongside a professional career.

04

Becoming yourself

Lessons absorbed, pain included, on the way to his own voice.

The reading experience

A first-hand account of a working life that moved between publishing, music, business, politics and sport.

The memoir is candid about doubt and about following the crowd rather than an instinct.

Readers who like career memoirs written without self-mythology will recognise the tone.
